PRINCIPALS for GLOBAL MISSION

What Is "Mission" and Why Do We Do It?

The mission of the church is the heart of Jesus’ Great Commission to his disciples in Matthew 28:

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Christians believe that Jesus has sent us to be a light to the whole world, not just our small corner of it. We meet people where their needs are, knowing that God has a deep concern for the poor and oppressed. We are challenged to be God’s hand extended to others, demonstrating the love that has been given to us through Jesus Christ. In mission, we share the Good News about Christ, not just with words, but also with our actions. Our global mission activities are guided by the principles outlined below.

Yorkminster’s Guiding Principles
for Global Mission

  • Support projects our congregation/members get involved in and are passionate about.
  • Give all congregation members opportunities for hands-on, personal experience with cross-cultural mission.
  • Become involved in the lives and ministries of our missionary families.
  • Focus on maintaining a broad base of involvement to better educate our congregation about the scope of mission activities in the world.
  • Create awareness by communicating our focus and activities to the congregation to foster their personal involvement.
  • Model and encourage regular prayer for partner mission workers and ministries.
  • Give preference to partnering with ministries which rise from within the PC(USA) context.
  • Make sure the recipient provides accountability for good stewardship in how dollars are spent.
