Outreach Programs


Angel Tree - The Angle Tree is a program that provides gifts to underprivileged families in our area.  Gifts are purchased by members of the congregation and distributed at Christmas.  This fund is used to purchase and distribute additional food items to help these families.    Contact: Vicki Morgan     898-6127

Avalon Center - Avalon is committed to intervening in and reducing the incidence of domestic violence and sexual assault.  In order to achieve this mission, Avalon offers shelter, advocacy, education, and support to survivors, and fosters awareness and prevention by educating the community.  Contact: Barbara Siebert     258-5022

Campus Ministry - This ministry is located at CNU and helps to fund a campus ministry for the students.  Contact:Rev. Melanie C. Reuter     595-7604

Deacon's Fund  This fund is used to help people in crisis in the community.  It is used to pay electric bills, heating bills, hospital bills, etc.  A member of the  Local Outreach Committee or a deacon meet with each person and interview them.  Contact:  Jim Haskett 898-3260

Habitat for Humanity -  Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization.  Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 100,000 houses in more than 80 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States.   Contact: Janet V. Lackey Free Clinic - A faith-based free health ministry that has been operating in Lackey since 1995. The clinic seeks to build a bridge of healing and compassion to serve the physically, emotional and spiritual needs of the medically disadvantaged on the Peninsula.

Makemie Woods - Makemie Woods is a Camp and Conference Center owned and operated by the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and supported by the Peninsula District of the United Methodist Church. Their ministry and mission is to provide a beautiful outdoor setting where children and adults can gather, play, pray and learn, encouraging one another in the name of Jesus Christ.   Contact: Rev. Meals on Wheels  Meals on Wheels helps the elderly or disabled person recovering from recent hospitalization or illness.  It provides home delivery of nutritious meals and improves the quality of life of those with limited ability to shop or cook.  They are always looking for drivers.  Contact:  898-4252

Members Ministry Money (Triple M) Members of the church are invited to use up to $500.00 in whatever personal ministry they choose.  The member must be actively involved in this ministry.  Some examples are fixing up a man's house before his home was taken over by the city, purchasing Bibles for the jail inmates who are visited by church members, and taking underprivileged children to Busch Gardens for the day. 

Menchville House Menchville House is an organization to heal hurting women and children.  Women are offered a Christ centered , long term shelter, with resources to rebulid self esteem, live independent lives, and contribute to their community. Contact:  874-3850

Peninsula Pastoral Counseling - Provides pastoral counseling, divorce therapy, mediation and educational services to individuals, couples, and families. Services are provided by professionally certified counselors who are dually trained in psychology and theology.

PORT and LINK  LINK's services include an emergency services center, a food and clothing pantry, and a winter homeless shelter program.  PORT offers a mentoring program, a life skills progam and a housing program (a new initiative assisting disabled clients with permanent housing).  LINK's clients include infants and children, families, singles and elders, individuals with HIV/AIDS, the homeless, and the mentally and physically disabled.

Red Cross  Yorkminster sponsors blood drives throughout the year.  These are manned by Local Outreach members.

Salvation Army Mobile Canteen -The Salvation Army is a world wide organization serving those in need.  The mobile canteen is located at the Salvation Army’s facilities on Big Bethel Road in Hampton.  It is dispatched in times of emergency to feed the hungry.  On 9/11 it spent 2 weeks feeding rescue crews at the Pentagon.  Locally, this canteen feeds the homeless in our area each workday of the week, 52 weeks per year.  Last year 45,993 meals were served.  Women from Yorkminster support this effort by providing sandwiches every month which are then distributed to the homeless.  Contact: Captain Joe Burton     247-5465 

York County Food Closet   The first Sunday of each month, members of the congregation bring in food items for the food closet.  These items are transported to the food closet each month.  Members of the committee also purchase food from discount clubs such as Sam's Club or Costco and take it to the food closet.  They are reimbursed for the food, but it provides the opportunity to purchase items at a discount.

Zuni - Zuni Home provides sheltered employment to mentally challenged adults. An enterprise of Presbyterian Homes & Family Services, Inc., it operates in conjunction with the Zuni Presbyterian Homes in Zuni, VA.  The four homes offer mentally challenged men and women the opportunity for self-improvement within a residential community setting. Each resident is encouraged to pursue the highest level of independence and the maximum quality of life.  Contact: Robert Bishop     804-598-8570
