Our journey of faith and service
OUR HISTORY
A Humble Beginning
FOUNDING YORKMINSTER
Yorkminster Presbyterian Church began in September 1954 when a small group gathered at the home of Margaret and W. Cowles Hogge in Dare to form a new church. The first worship service took place on January 9, 1955, at the old courthouse in Yorktown. Officially, the church was organized on August 14, 1955, under the Norfolk Presbytery, starting with 51 charter members.

At the time of its organization, the church had minimal physical resources—one worn-out piano, a few chairs, and $1,801.27. However, the members were grateful for the spiritual blessings they had received and remained committed to their mission.

Calling the First Minister
Dr. Walter E. Harrop was called as Yorkminster’s first minister on September 30, 1956. Under his leadership, plans were made to build the church on Route 17 in Grafton.
Church Construction and Growth
With financial assistance from other churches and individual donations, six acres of land were purchased, and construction began in September 1957 on a $50,000 air-conditioned building with six Sunday School rooms, kitchen, pastor's study and large hall (today’s Founders Hall) to be used for worship services. The first services were held in the new building on May 11, 1958.
A classroom wing was added in 1963. The current sanctuary with additional office and church school space followed in 1969, completing the existing main building of Yorkminster. The sanctuary was dedicated on May 11, 1969 at the morning worship service. About the only thing missing was the steeple, and the numerous delays before it was finally in place became a community joke. But the sanctuary was worshipful and beautiful and a happy culmination of much effort by many members of Yorkminster.
Covenant Hall and Expansion
In 2006, Yorkminster added a multi-purpose building, Covenant Hall, to host large musical worship services, fellowship meals, and community events. In 2018, the church celebrated paying off the Covenant Hall construction loan with a note burning ceremony during the annual Thanksgiving breakfast.

PRESCHOOL AND GIVING GARDEN
In 1998, Yorkminster founded a preschool to celebrate and nurture each child as a unique creation of God. The Giving Garden, established in 2010, provides fresh produce to the York County Church Women United Food Closet year-round.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Yorkminster is actively involved in community events such as Easter and Halloween celebrations, Red Cross blood drives, and participates in ministries like Kairos Prison Ministry and PORT/LINK, which serves the homeless. The church also supports various local and global charities and missions.
Global Outreach
HONDURAS MISSIONS AND LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD
For several years, Yorkminster sent teams to Honduras to conduct medical clinics, build homes, and install stoves. Later, the church participated in the Living Waters for the World program, installing water treatment systems and conducting health education training in the region.
VIRTUAL WORSHIP DURING THE PANDEMIC
In 2020, Yorkminster began broadcasting its worship services online. This effort grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping the congregation connected when in-person gatherings were restricted. Today, the church's services are live-streamed globally on its website, Facebook, and YouTube.

Continuing the Mission
& Looking Forward
Yorkminster has seen periods of growth, stability, and challenges, often reflecting growth in the surrounding area, economic fluctuations and the dynamism of called pastors. Despite changes in programs and leadership, the church's mission to serve Christ, grow in faith, and share his love has remained constant. Many current members are descendants of the founding congregation, carrying on the legacy of service.

As we look to the future, Yorkminster remains committed to growing, serving, and dedicating itself to the church of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God, and thanks to the Yorkminster faithful who came before us and bequeathed us the church we love.
